Stunning! Your works belong in a Galery!! How do you get that wonderful blueish-purle haze in there?

Thanks a lot Jeroen!

The purple haze wasn't by any magical process... just by following the rules of atmospheric (or linear) perspective. Generally, the more air/haze that is between you and the subject makes the subject lighter and the colors more muted. So the farthest peaks will appear to blend into the sky. So I decided to keep the closest darks still pretty light and the colors pretty muted.

The sky is actually very close to a neutral gray but it leans towards viridian green. And the closest darks are mostly Ultramarine+Alizarin Crimson+Ivory Black. Even though teachers and some artists have a vendetta against ivory black, its ok to use as long as you realize it is a really low chroma blue. So I just used it to lower the chroma of ultramarine and then shifted the color towards purple with just a little alizarin crimson.

Here's a work in progress shot with my palette in front. The colors that are shown there are the only ones I used in the painting.

Thanks again!

Thank you very much for sharing these details! Especially the progress photo. I was amazed by how small the painting actually is. I liked to see that you made some pencil outlines on your white canvas. Your paintings are always so well balanced. Nothing is overdone, nothing is missing, every paintstroke seems to be there for a reason. I always enjoy looking at your art work!

No problem! And just for clarification, they are lines done with a small flat brush and raw umber out of the tube (applied very lightly)... This way graphite/charcoal doesn't mix with the paint and if you are patient and let it dry for a day or so, if you have to wipe your progress out, the lines generally stay there. Thanks again for the compliments!
